My dad keeps pushing the volume button with his side, which lowers the volume. Will this case prevent accidental button pushing of the volume button?

No. I had the same hopes for my mom’s phone but no luck. I suppose it cuts down on the accidental volume lowering a little but it doesn’t stop it.

Does it cover/protect the external screen?

It does not have a cover/protection over the external screen. The case is a basic plastic case that clips on.

I do a lot of texting, but get annoyed with predictive options- can I just enter the letters I want?

This item is a case. We do not sell phones. Sounds like that would be an adjustable setting....I suggest to check user manual, text message section.
