An odd but rather sweet book
This book, as others have noted, often reads like a not very good translation - as, in fact, do some of the reviews (despite the apparently English names of the reviewers). But it is a good book to buy for anyone interested in learning a little more about the brave, inspiring Ukrainian nation, its history and culture. It's a quick, pleasant read, with plenty of intriguing details. Odd, but worth buying.

Not 'Great'
The victims of Putin's invasion deserve far better than this. Poor and muddled standard of English. Obvious errors . Where is "The writer can be seen wearing the 20 grivnas bank note" (page 48)? Photos of poor quality. A greatly revised edition is urgently needed for suffering Ukrainians and their supporters alike.

A non-in-depth snapshot of Ukraine
This is a quick, at times fun read for people who know nothing about Ukraine. However, this is not an in-depth study and at times it is very superficial and often unresearched facts with many omissions. The editing also leaves a great deal to be desired.

Quite disappointing
I have no idea why this book is rated so highly.Although the translation is quite sweet it is very frustrating, and at times incomprehensible. In the chapter on Easter eggs we read 'the use and manufacture of urinal designs were characteristic of the ethnic groups of the Slavs who were later called Ukrainians'. I have read this several times. Does it mean urinals in Ukraine are decorated like Easter eggs, or that urine is used in the production of the designs? Or something else?'The first baby was embroidered from the cloth and trimmed with candles at the baptism of the godparents'again left me confused. The chapter headings are often followed by a large white space and the chapter actually begins on the following page. This would be relatively easy to sort out. The black and white photographs are mainly clear. The paper quality is quite poor.Of course I have learnt some things about Ukraine that I did not know, and it has a certain charm, but I would not recommend this book to a friend.
