I originally wrote a very negative review of this product a couple years ago. Due to the decline of family owned Chinese restaurants over the past 30 years in my area, I can no longer get decent hot and sour soup in a local restaurant. Although I’ve done my own Chinese cooking since 1977 after taking a class, I’ve never been happy with any of the hot and sour soup recipes which I’ve made myself. I finally managed to make decent restaurant quality soup by adding the following items to the Sun-Bird mix. The egg and tofu as suggested on the package is a start but doesn’t add much flavor. I would have used black mushrooms but only had dried shiitakes and I used the mushroom water in which I soaked the dried mushrooms as part of the soup mix. Crucial to making the mix sour is adding a teaspoon of vinegar. I used Chinkiang vinegar. To make it hot, I added 1/4 teaspoon of white pepper. Finally, I added a tablespoon of cornstarch to thicken it even more beyond what the egg did. I might have also added scallions to give it more color. My one negative comment on the mix is that the dehydrated carrots don’t add much to the soup and weren’t completely rehydrated when I finished making it. Finally, my recent positive experience left me wondering how much of the mix helped make the soup similar to how much the stone in the stone soup story helped the soup itself?

Love this soup! My last order was labeled as Hot n Sour but contained something different. Vendor was prompt and courteous and problem solved immediately. Happy Camper here.

Delicious and fair price

It is a bit better than most pre-packaged hot and sour soup I've tried, but a far cry from properly made hot and sour soup. Why is it necessary to supply ones own egg?Why not a canned version including the egg?
