Makes the history of art accessible to younger children
I didn’t encounter a true art history book until the old standby Jansen, the history of art. That would have been overwhelming to my grandchildren who love, art, museums, and any art exhibit. This book allows them to explore the world of art in a very meaningful and very readable fashion. I would recommend it for every child, elementary and middle school – maybe even as an entry-level in high school. Every child should have exposure to art and this book is well written and very comprehensive. I have purchased it for all three families of grandchildren.

Great collection for home library
I personally love arts and music. This encyclopedia is definitely a must have at home if you have children who love art. Since my 7 years old son is a music lover who plays the piano, this book helps him get to know a lot more about the historical background and knowledge about different music periods and composers. For me, I learnt a lot about the different art period and history through reading this art encyclopedia. You wouldn’t feel bored as it has a lot of colorful pictures and illustrations to explain the texts.

High-quality but not comprehensive
The media could not be loaded. I love the book. It’s beautiful. It has high-quality photos. I like how it goes through the subject matter starting with the principles of art before getting into famous work. It mostly focuses on painting, but it does have sections for sculpture, photography, music, and dance. I am however very, unhappy that they used the wave of Kanagawa as they’re back cover art, and it’s not covered once in the book. Seems like kind of a slight.

Colorful, Interesting, High Quality
This is a 1" thick 300 page hardcover book with lots of photographs and short descriptions of 4-5 items per page spread. It's a European-American minded collection of Historic to Modern Day Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Music, Dance. It mentions Egypt, Asia, and Persia. It's mostly "white history" with some pages of African-American musicians like Count Basie, Dizzy Gillepsie, and Beyonce. There's also The Beatles and Elvis Presley. We're using this book for 10 yo 5th Grade Homeschool, who's more into reading about things than spending time doing it (he reads about the classic paintings more than he'll sit down with paints and canvas out). This book is colorful and interesting, with short paragraphs, and you can jump around, so we keep it out and pick a few pages to study at a time. We can use this as an Arts/History/Social Studies textbook and get through it all in 1-2 months.
