Very practical and insightful guide to surviving executive stress
The higher you climb the thinner the air! And I have found this guide to be invaluable to coping with that stressful and rarified atmosphere. The examples and stories are a great comfort, knowing that there are people and circumstances like you and that there are practical methods for coping. As someone who has been in executive positions since my early thirties it is so wrong to see senior positions as priveleged and easy. When nothing can be further from the truth. The stress, office politics and risk is thrown at you. The expectations are so high and yet you are often not only left unsupported but actually attacked for driving change. That’s why a guide like this is so critical. Well written and easy to digest for a busy life it will give you the tools to get through it. I can thoroughly recommend it above all other business guides for surviving at the top.

Knowing Doesn't Make a Difference, Habits Do
So many books out there on "self help" and even professional development. What I've found both as CEO and coaching CEO's is, knowing something or how to do something rarely makes a difference. It's WHAT you IMPLEMENT that changes everything. Not only has Kevin Lawrence provided brilliant insight into habits of top performers, but he's included a framework in his book to insure that your implementation is top notch. Highly recommend this book to anyone that is a high performer and want's to get to the next level or aspires to be a high performer.

Don’t just read this book. Do it!
So many leadership books are written that focus on growing your business or taking care of your employees. Kevin has written an amazing book that focuses on taking care of yourself first. It’s full of incredibly helpful tools you can use based on whatever life or your business throws at you. This is not a book you read once. It’s one you’ll keep coming back to as you journey through life and business. As a business coach, I will absolutely use this for myself and my clients.

not your average success book
The author imparts reality on the reader. It's not the typical leadership fluff in all the other books. Such as, you're not going to be good at everything, so focus on what you're good at. Very easy to read. Each chapter has an exercise to help you really think about and develop the life you want to live as a high achiever.

Road-tested advice with a generous helping of tough love
I met Kevin more than a decade ago at a Gazelles coaching conference and we have remained in touch. Over the years I have spoken with several CEOs who have been clients of Kevin who have sung his praises. I already knew this book was going to be valuable before I read it. And yes, it delivers. It delivers sound road-tested advice with a generous helping of tough love. I'm not too proud to say that I picked up some useful tips for myself that I plan to use with my clients.

This Book Can Help You
I heard Kevin speak about his book soon after the emotionally charged sale of my company, and the timing could not have been better. After completing his Resilience Self-Assessment, it was clear I had some work to do on dealing with my emotional junk – and so I did. Your Oxygen Mask First provided the catalyst that has led to profound changes in my life, and in my personal relationship...and, for that, I am so grateful. This book is must read, must do for everyone. Thank you, Kevin!

Immediate Impact
Kevin has masterfully identified how easy it is to lose sight of our own well-being, especially when deeply focused on the growth of our business. I used his book with a peer group of business owners and all found the messages poignant and the planning tools helpful - we are tracking our progress and holding each other accountable to these healthy habits.

A great practical guide to improve your performance.
There are books that are a philosophy and then books that are a roadmap. This is a book that combines the two and gives CEOs a practical step-by-step action plan to being world class performers.

Worth reading
While the title and "17 habits" description didn't excite me to read the book the clever "You First" play is exactly what the book is about. I saw Kevin present at a conference and could tell he was all in on the topic. The book is well worth a read and I can't see anyone not getting value from it. Even though we should all know that you can't take care of others, our companies etc. unless we are taking care of ourselves the book has some great reminders and I found it motivating to make some changes. Easy to read but more than simple repetition of already known principles and ideas. Kevin provides his thoughts and examples to make the book worth the time it takes. After I read it I also got the workbook which has exercises and it made it much more useful and easier to implement. I definitely recommend the workbook as well.

Looking after yourself as part of a complete life is not being selfish!
The simplicity in the main thrust of this book is what gives it incredible power. My own advisory and coaching experience with CEO's etc is consistent with Kevin's in that the biggest issue with CEO's, business leaders and owners is their commitment to their business or career outweighs the focus and commitment that they can provide to other areas of their life. It is not through a lack of desire to spend time on their self or with family and friends that causes the issue. The hard grained habits of high achievers means that they put their work commitments first and foremost in their daily plan and the other areas of their life get neglected until it is too late. I'd encourage any leader to take some time to work through the exercises contained in this book, and reset their personal habits to make sure that they look after themselves first before they can effectively lead others and be happy in their interactions with other important people in their life.
