I bought another cheap optical cable from Amazon and it wasn't quite right. While it would sync two ADAT-capable Focusrite devices no audio was coming through. I'd noticed one end didn't really sit in the socket with a satisfying click.Focusrite actually mention the Amazon Basics cable as suitable on their website so I decide to see if it worked (otherwise, chances are, I was looking at a more serious hardware problem). Well, it worked fine, and inserted snugly. Problem solved.
