Do you use the scarifier or rake first? what is the difference?

I used the scarifier first. That is the main reason I bought the unit, I saw the aerator as a bonus. I did use the aerator as the last major garden work before winter. I didn't know what to expect but my opinion is that it is (just ?) a more robust scarifier. I had already taken out more moss and thatch than I thought possible with the scarifier and then about three weeks later I took out almost as much again with the 'so called' aerator. It inevitably churns up the top surface of the soil especially where the grass is thin or in places where there is more moss than grass. So, the lawn has a sheen of brown to it now. Not too worried going into the winter. The test of how good the aerator has been will be next April/May. Based upon my experience I would be reluctant to use the aerator again, it is too severe. I will change my mind if I have a superb lawn next year.

what is the length of the guarantee please?

I had 2 years on mine but bearing in mind your do not use a scarifier very frequently - you do not get many uses within the guarantee period. I had only used mine about 4 times when the cheap plastic gearing in the motor disintegrated completely. Von Haus do not supply and parts and do not offer any remedy when your warranty runs out. Avoid!

Which is the aerator and which is the scarifier

This machine is a scarifier (using the bladed tines) and lawn rake (using the wire tines). It is not an aerator as such. An aerator has spikes or hollow tines. If you want an aerator, look for lawn aerators. Hope this helps

Is this an aerator as everyone keeps talking about scarifying only? No mention of jokes being poked to aerate the soil

It is both a scarifier and an aerator. It comes with a scarifier already fitted and the aerator separately packed. It is a very good machine and it is easy to swap tools over. When using the machine I advise starting from a high setting and take it lower if needed. The scarifier removes thatch very well, and the aerator works best when grass is dry and the soil moist.
