Can these kefir crystals be used with tea and sugar, like kombucha scoby?

With water grains you use sugar and water anyway. Whether you could add a tea taste in tge second ferment, I am not sure but you could try.

can you make kefur with plant based milk?

I use "Water Kefir Grains" to make Water Kefir! Kefir grains are different for making milk kefir as far as I understand. Albeit you are asking about "plant based milk" … I'd assume you need the "Milk Kefir" grains?!

How long can i keep it in its packaging before culturing. Do i put the package in the fridge before taking it abroad as a gift cos u don't ship overse

I kept mine in a fridge for a day before culturing. I would not keep it much more than 2 or 3 days in the fridge if you can help it.
