Great for curious kids.
I bought this last year as a gift for an autistic boy who was curious about living things. He's a country boy who prefers nature to computers. It's ideal for long summer holidays to get kids out of the house, encouraging them to look after something and generate an interest, while discovering how creatures live. Excellent value for money when you consider how much time the child spends with it. If Nanny has a farm with a great supply of ants to stock it, even better.

Great but no ants or recommendation where to buy ants
Great kit, but have to buy ants from another company, no link or recommendation for purchasing ants. LORE is a better product, we have bought stick insects kit from them. I would recommend buying from LORE for other bug homes!

Lid of the chamber was a nightmare getting off.
It was an amazing product but I had the hardest time getting off the lid; where the queen was to be situated. I mean, it’s relatively easy to get off, but you would have to tug it off, when I tried to gently lay substrate on top of the sand in the chamber (which Involved taking the lid off) , the lid flew off and so did quite a chunk of sand with it, as the container tipped a bit. thank god only a few ants were on my lap, I got most of them back in, but for now I’m worried for the queen, so much stress was put on her through the transportation. It would be great if the had made the queens chamber a red tint, so I could inspect them without putting stress on the colony, and the lid was more of a screw then a piece. Otherwise, brilliant product, would recommend, for people with delicate hands…

Love my ant world - patience is key!!!
If you think you are going to buy this and magically have a thriving colony then you are mistaken. Ant keeping requires some pre-thought and planning but ultimately is very rewarding. I have bought a few of these over the years and always come back to them despite building a couple of my own nests. Why? Because they are well priced, do exactly what you need and are versatile and expandable. Construction is very easy. Use a folded piece of paper to load in the sand and do it in a sink or outside just be sure. I don't use the plastic insert that you stick stickers on, which make sit even easier and lets you use all the sand easily. Ants - THE KIT DOESN'T COME WITH ANTS. I always collect my own queen ants in the nuptial flight season. I store them in test tubes with some water soaked cotton wool and a small dab of honey. You then have to wait until the following spring before you'll even have a few ants to look at. I also attach a small reptile heating pad to one area of my nest to extend the active season of the nest. Ants without a queen might tunnel etc but you'll have a limited experience. More ants (brood boosting)... you can harvest additional cocoons from other an nests and place them in yours. The queen and the workers don't know the difference and will treat them as their own. Make sure you don't take too many and that they are the same species! Summary - with some time and love you'll have a thriving nest. This kit is great.

Not exactly what I thought
Have to collect ants yourself. Maybe my own fault for not looking in to it but assumed (never assume) it would be similar to the butterfly sets you can get where they post out. We set it up but never got round to finding ants so ended up in the bin a year later never being used. Good quality pricing is nice and clear instructions. If you can source your own ants I can imagine this being fun and educational for kids. So will give 3 stars -maybe unfair but I personally feel it should have been a little clearer.

Great value and helpful manufacturer
I bought this ant farm for my son after initially buying a gel based one for twice the price that I sent back. This one was much better in terms of suitability. I later learned that ants prefer the dark to build tunnels therefore the included screens help. Otherwise they won’t dig up to the edge of the screen affecting the ability to view them The included tube and magnifying box is great to use as an easy access way to add a wet tissue for water and add food. Lastly, as I read another review the company was helpful in supplying extra tube and magnifying box which can be used to extend the kit by chaining two magnifying boxes together. The company is now called playmonster and indeed after dropping them an email they were really helpful in supplying spares. Unusual to get such a helpful company these days. If you’d like to have a go at starting an ant farm this seems a great and economical start. I would recommend doing some background research though, but the included booklet is actually very useful and informative. A great set overall.

Fantastic for little people!
After reading and learning from the reviews, I finally caved and purchased this for my son whilst taking on board the sellotape get tips (all of the loose edges are sealed tight!) My four year old loves all bugs, as much as they make me shudder, so I bought this for him and daddy to set up. We only managed to catch a few ants so far but have a nice colony in our garden we keep collecting from. Fortunately our ants seems pretty happy, and have already made lots of nice tunnels despite only living in there for 2 days so far :) my son is fascinated and I must admit, I've been found sitting next to the ant farm watching them carting soil around! No escapees, lots of active bugs and tunnels - win. Really great little gift, highly recommended.

Too flimsy and badly constructed
When buying this product I thought because we were dealing with ants the product would come with seals. That was a mistake, this product is so flimsy and badly constructed that no matter how well you think you have put it together there are holes and gaps. I am very much in favour of children seeing how insects live however not when it compromises the household. We have snails, lady bugs, butterflies and stick insects but none live in an enclosure that they can escape from. I do not recommend this product unless you want ants running around in your home.

This was a Christmas present, for my 7 year old nephew. the box arrived in perfect condition, however the bag of sand was not sealed and all the sand had spilled out and I was only left a small amount in bag and box, present is ruined, there looked to no attempt of the bag being properly sealed…

It took a few weeks to get. I bought it for my niece as a birthday gift. Besides the delay in shipping it just is junky quality if I am being honest. Sand/dirt likes to trickle out when you pick it up. She has been using it for about a week now and she is pretty disappointed too. It's very small and like I mentioned, just not great quality. Also, 2 of the green pieces were partially white and that definitely has something to do with the plastic being strained by pressure. So was this product used and then resold?? Overall, the quality of this is something that you would find at the dollar store.
