Maxims (The William of Moerbeke Translation Series) (English and French Edition)

A seventeenth-century courtier's cynical reflections on human nature, love, fate & death
Since La Rouchefoucauld's lived in a different world, at a distant time, we can't expect him to be politically correct or a positive thinker Yet often his observations hit the mark even in our day. Above all, he is always witty, a fascinating mix of frivolity and philosophy. The pithy Maxims, being in French and English, offer an entertaining supplement to French study. They can be used to spark a lively discussion in tutoring sessions. Or they can be used to build vocabulary.Included in this edition among other things, is a portrait of La Rochfoucauld by himself. This is a charming piece of prose. Also included is La Rochfoucauld’s scathing portrait of a cardinal, whose portrait of La Rochfoucauld is equally critical. This verbal mud slinging between two prominent men of the age is quite amusing. The introduction attempts to interpret La Rochfoucauld's thought for modern readers. It gets a bit pedantic, but is still helpful.I'm delighted with this book. It makes especially good off-and-on reading. I pick it up when in the mood for some biting social satire.

Uncommon wisdom, clearly and concisely expressed
I did not dislike anything. These are remarkable statements, true of most people but not accepted by them. According to what I've read, the author suffered a serious head wound, was unconscious for many weeks and began to write these maxims when he'd recuperated. These translators don't mention anything about that, which is the only deficiency of this translation.
