Q: what's to stop a thief from just unbolting it?

Nothing is ever completely theft-proof. If a thief really wants something, they will get it. However, anything you can do to make this as noisy and time-consuming as possible helps deter would-be thieves from even bothering because there are likely much easier targets in your area. To get to the bolts, they'd have to contend with removing the cover, removing the hammered-on caps and ball bearings under those, and then unbolting the screws. It would take them a lot of effort and a really long time, and they'd likely make a lot of noise doing it. Unless you've got something really valuable and you don't have any neighbors, I don't see any thieves bothering with this stuff. This is about as safe as you can get your bike chain anchors.

Q: How difficult is it to remove in order to change location? (example, moving to a new place)

I think if you pound the metal bolt covers in to place after installation via directions that removal might be challenging. I have not moved mine after it was installed, this is merely speculation.

Q: how much damage is caused from installing this device?

I embedded it into freshly laid concrete with the provided bolts. I didn't have to drill the holes, but it hasn't caused any damage the way I installed it. Hope that helped, sorry!

It is definitely ring-like, but I think the base part was welded to the C part.
