It’s really interesting to see the different attitude the squirrels visiting our garden have to these loose peanuts versus ones bought in their shells. Shell-on peanuts are clearly the most highly prized: they’re the ones eaten from first, and the ones taken and buried all around the garden.But the squirrels will stop what they’re doing in the midst of a session of burying nuts to have a snack on these, and as soon as all of the shell-on nuts have been eaten/hidden, then the squirrels start on the undressed nuts in earnest and they get cleared out too.The naked nuts are better value insofar as the squirrels (birds and hedgehogs) actually eat them, and less of a nuisance in that the garden isn’t all dug up to hide them for later and we don’t end up with random peanut plants growing everywhere round the garden from these.The nuts look pleasant enough – they have a good, glossy appearance and don’t seem at all dry or shrivelled. The squirrels clearly enjoy them, but they don’t seem to trigger the same impulses to store them as in-shell nuts.They’re supplied in a plastic sack with a thread- stitched top that when unpicked in the right place simply opens out without needing to cut in to the plastic.
