Brilliant noir especially due to the cast
Brilliant noir especially due to the cast. The script could have been a bit more elaborated and the photography a bit more inspired.

One of the great Burt Lancaster movies as he emerged as leading man
One of the great Burt Lancaster movies as he emerged as leading man. Very male dominated movie with the female partners and key players only seen in retrospect or as objects of hope and redemption if they can break out. Good characterisation and motivation and a great baddie as head of the guards, Hume Cronin is in great form as a man with small man syndrome and sadistic tendencies.

Yvonne De Carlo in a flashback
I only watched this because Yvonne De Carlo was in it and she would go on to appear with Burt Lancaster in 'Criss Cross'. This stylised and unrealistic prison drama comes nowhere near the quality of 'Criss Cross'. De Carlo has a small part as the woman of one of the prisoners who we see in a flashback which doesn't work.Hume Cronyn gives a sterling performance as the prison officer who can be both tough and considerate. He wears a vest whilst torturing a prisoner and in his face you can see the potential for volatility.Charles Bickford is good, but he is past his prime and no match for Burt Lancaster.

Rarely seen on TV this is a great prison story with many sub-plots
Readers of my reviews will know that I am particularly fond of the 40's and 50's. Rarely seen on TV this is a great prison story with many sub-plots. Highly recommended.

Five Stars
Rain, misery, abuse, suicide, legally sanctioned sadism, hopeless nihilism; a monochrome masterwork - magnificent!
