Still usable in 2022 IF you are prepared for workarounds/mods
Purchased via another website, brand new as an experiment. For context, I also have a brand new P'9981 for reference and comparison. Clearing up some misconceptions about this device; P’9883: - 4G signal does work in the UK! - No voice over LTE (VoLTE); drops down to H+ (EE) - No dock in side the box - Oleophobic coating is much better than P’9981 - YouTube does work, via mobile browser - Has a flashlight/torch - Camera is noticeably better than P’9881, and is usable - Typing is as fast, keys are not slippery but doesn’t feel as premium as the metal p’9981 keys - Clock is custom, but am underwhelmed - WhatsApp will install and work from website, but only over Wi-Fi (IF NOT ACTIVATED) - Has Bluetooth file transfer, and calls, perhaps wireless music - Possibly 2-3 day battery now no BIS - Back Plate feels more like leather, than rubber of P'9981 **JAN 22 SERVERS OFFLINE CAUSES ACTIVATION AND SETUP ISSUES WITH THIS PHONE** -WhatsApp will work on Cellular after Activation -Includes 1080p output -BlackBerry 10 needs activation. Only possible via reader bug on specific software; 10.3.3.3216. It shipped on: 10.3.1.2576. -BlackBerry desktop software cannot activate or communicate with the phone until it’s unlocked -If not activated, it will send you a notification every 5-20 minutes to complete activation, which gets very annoying -Had to hack/crack to get a ExFat memory card over 16gb to work, as servers are offline to download supporting drivers. Used DBB to do this. Now works with a 128gb card, and can play back movies. For comparison, the P'9981: - Great build quality, nice keyboard - Included dock works like a wireless charger - Keyboard lights up white (eng) and red (ara) - 3G works on EE, but only gets 3G signal by a window. Full bars outside. 2G inside mostly - Oleophobic shield, if there is one, is not smooth out of the box - Buttons for calling and ending calls is really enjoyable - No 4G compatibility - Notably less call quality - Notably less internet speeds - Texts are fast 3-5s send and receive - Can use mobile hotspot - NO APPS OR WORKING BROWSER - Included dock works very well, doubles up as a nice alarm clock, works like a partial wireless charger - Because it’s so thin, slips out of pockets easily: so ideally needs leather pouches - PD leather pouches are still very expensive and rare in 2022 - Bluetooth works with car, file transfer etc - Great battery life 4 days of light use, 1 long day of battery intensive things like Bluetooth - Facebook app doesn’t work on Wi-Fi! - Possibly 2-3 day battery now no BIS, got 2.5 days at a crowded music festival network - Camera is bad, but usable - No Torch function despite the flash module - Back plate feels more like rubber
