An unfairly criticised film. A shame it flopped.
Right this is an honest review from someone who has liked some Guy Richie movies and hated some others, especially 'Revolver. After noticing that this new King Arthur film flopped and reading the bad reviews, I only bought this film as I have just upgraded to 4k and was fed up waiting for more critical acclaimed films to be released. So I bought this only to test my new 4k bluray player never expecting to like the film. I was therefore very surprised how good the film is. Unlike the last big budget King Arthur film, it does not try to fit the legend into a historical context, thus compromising the fantasy element unlike 2004s 'King Arthur'. It is also not as weak willed and plastic as the 'First Night' film. This movie is for people who liked 'Excalibur' although fans of that great 70s movie may have a gripe with the liberties it takes with the establish mythology. Guy Richie tries to reinvent the myth but he launches his version head first into the realms of fantasy without constraining the magical tale us fantasy lovers like. I respect that. The film looks great, the acting was better than expected and I feel the criticism is unfair. I enjoyed and the fact i was expecting to dislike it, made my enjoyment even better. Shame there will be no sequel due to it flopping at the box office and not making a profit. All I ask is you watch it with an open mind and try not be annoyed at the deviations from what we, the ones who hold 'Excalibur' as the bench mark of King Arthur films, and you may be pleasantly surprised. Overall, a film unfairly criticised. PS: one thing that may annoy you is the cockney accents that seem to suit the film Snatch more than a fantasy tale set in medieval timeline ..... if that doesn't spoil it for you, nothing should. Leave these small gripes at the door and you should enjoy it like i did.

A Missed Chance - Remake Excalibur Next Time, Mate
The problem with anyone's "take" on a legend story, be it Arthur or Robin Hood, is they often drift from the "legendary" facts and this can jar with anyone who is watching the film to see an "accurate" telling of the well known tale.Immediately the film starts with Mordred attacking Arthur's father and this, as many Arthur buffs will know, is well off kilter as Mordred is today known as the illegitimate son of Arthur himself and the same person whom Arthur kills, and who mortally wounds Arthur in the final battle. So straight off his threw me. Merlin is mentioned but never appears. That was a missed chance.I like most of Ritchie's films but we then get a growing up montage of Arthur that appears to be set in 1960s/70s East End of London. All you can say is that it jars you away from getting interested in the story. I don't want every one running around saying "Forsooth, sir" but it has to be a better idea than this. There are some clever ideas: Initially it is annoying Arthur passes out whenever he holds the sword two handed. Later he seems to get Matrix-style powers as he masters it.. The Arthur "gang" has some promise but it never really gets developed.I read Guy Ritchie planned six films about Arthur, but in truth he needed to plan this one much better.Yet again Excalibur, the John Boorman from 1981 carries the Arthur mantle better - although it has always been a bit hokey and slightly over acted.

Nicely done Mr Richie
*** This review may contain spoilers ***This arrived on Bluray Monday and we sat last night with no expectations to watch. From the opening sequences to the end this is an excellent movie, humorous in places in that way the Guy is know for but action packed. It moves away from the usual romantic image of Arthur and in its place gives us a man who is the opposite of a hero. He does not want his birthright he is quite happy ducking and diving, running scams and schemes whilst protecting the brothel and the inhabitants that rescued and raised him.I thought Charlie was very good match for this role, he looses the odd American accent he has and what comes out is good east end boy. For me this gave him a role to actually grow into as I am going to assume there will be more films in this franchise. The cameo by David Beckham is excellent, the expression on his face was worth it!
