Q: How deep is the candle melting area? It's not clear from the picture whether the total height of the mechanism is 5 inches or the pot depth is 5".

The bottom of the pan is sloped and it has a depth from 4 to 6 inches. The middle value of the depth is about 5 inches.

Q: The lights are turning on but it stops working?

I don't have that knowledge, I'm even super satisfied with my product. In reality it is a thermostat, but it does not have an accurate control, but it works perfectly in my case.

Q: how do I know when the unit has reached the temperature (e.g. High) that I set it to? Does the indicator light change colour?

Good morning, you won't be able to have this standard, it's an analog control, but I can assure you that it worked perfectly. You can do your test using water, select the temperature and take a measurement with 4 thermometers and take the average, so you will know temperature x time. I hope I helped.
