Can the loops be detached without leaving through holes that would stop the rucksack being 100 percent waterproof?

I would say that the loops are not meant to be detached i.e. there is not an easy way to detach and then re-attach them as such. However, if you were to remove them, I would say that it would not affect the bag being 100 percent waterproof i.e. you should be OK as they are sealed from behind. Hope this helps!

What is the height of the bag when unrolled? Would it fit an item slightly longer than 50cm, say 54cm, if the top were less tightly strapped down?

The bag does not have a waterproof fastener. You simply roll down the top and apply the standard, rucksack style clips. It can keep the rain out of hours but you can’t swim with it.

How durable is this bag? As I would be using it for chainsaw/felling gear and conservation data recording units (heavy and sharp corners)

It strong and well finished! I have mine for 4 years using it pretty much every day carrying plenty of stuff. In your case I wouldn’t risk saying this bag is for you cos this is another level of heavy duty carrying...dunno! It might be good for you too.
