Could I use this to electrify 20 metres X 1 metre of chicken wire to prevent rats from eating my sweetcorn.

Yes. That is possible but you would need to make sure that the chicken wire is not attached to the ground/earth. That might be difficult. (You may have seen the type of plastic poles that farmers use to suspend electric fence wires). Electic deterrent fence/wires work as follows: The wire in the form that the kit provides comes with screw-in unsuators. These hold the wire in place and make sure the wire is not grounded. The postive (Red) cable from the unit is clipped to the wire. The 'Ground' (Black) wire from the unit is attached to a ground spike. When a creature touches the wire it completes a circuit from the positive wire back to gound and received a schock as the momentary high current passes through its body. If the wire (or your chicken wire) is touching ground/earth at any point the current will be contually passing to ground and the system wll not work. So, the problem is how to isolate the chicken wire from the gound. (Our solution on our allottment to the Rat/Sweet Corn problem is large inverted yoghurt pots. We cut a hole in the bottom large enough to fit around the stem of the plant. Cut a slit and ft the pot upside down around the stem and spray with WD40. The rats are not able to climb past the pot. The first time we used this method we lost no sweet corn to the rats. The previous year we lost the lot.

Can it be left outside so long as the plug is in the dry?

Just to clarify the protection rating for the power unit is IP 54. It protects from"rain in a downward direction only. Wind direction and strength may be an issue. My recommendation is to give it some additional shelter if possible. Shed/greenhouse/ or home made shelter? Far better where possible . Extend the HT supply using HT cable ( Ignition cable) from the power unit to the fence. Available from Amazon £1.00 a metre or there abouts. Please note the mains plug must be connected via an RCB mains voltage breaker for safety and statutory legislation
