Can this printer be hard wired to a laptop?

This printer has a USB 2 PORT to connect to a PC (if your laptop has a USB output port, which it should) via a USB cord.

Will this printer work without the paid subscription?

As in works out-of-the-box, yes. But… If you activate the scam subscription, no. HP pushes a permanent firmware 'update' that turns the printers into subscription only machines, they will never let you go back to it's stock firmware. HP's been bad to us ink wise(they hate ink refilling), so you might want to shop around for a better brand.

Do you have to download the app to scan?

Yes you have to download app. I have used the scanner and it took me a minute but, it wasn’t bad and it worked.

What type of ink cartridges does this use?

The ink cartridges are horrible. Every time I open one I get ink all over my hands. So much wasted ink! Be sure to open over a sink. My cartridges say 910,912,914,915. So much for 6 months of free ink from HP Instant Ink.
