The work of a young writer
Re-reading these after they were new and fresh I find them to be a little annoying in their attempts to forge a reputation for a new author,a little effortful. Not at all bad,but perhaps my tastes, like Barker's,have moved on from this form of horror, although in all fairness, there are some vivid ,well imagined, and original ideas in these volumes.I prefer Lovecraft these days, but I wouldn't call these bad by any means, just occasionally a little too obvious there's an effort to impress being made.
