Spalding Momentous EZ Assembly Portable Adjustable Outdoor Basketball Hoop – Assembles in 30 Minutes or Less

I bought this as a replacement for another Spalding hoop that was a multi-hour setup and breakdown. The setup on this is absolutely genius! The instructions were laid out very well, both via the video and printed booklet. I am a small (5’1”, 120lbs) but strong lady and I was able to completely unbox and begin the setup solo. There are definitely multiple steps that require 2 people - attaching the backboard and rim, and then raising the backboard and pole into the upright position and securing it. My 80yo 5’9” and in-shape father and I completed it without much difficulty (although a little more height on either one of us would have been helpful). In total it took about an hour, including unboxing, reviewing the video and written instructions, and then actually assembling the unit. All parts were packaged and labeled according to the associated step in the build. Nuts and screws threaded easily. This is a very sturdy unit with a large base and a pole/hoop that are situated more towards the center of the base. I filled the base with water and added 100lbs of sand on the rear of the base as extra precaution since it is on an ever-so-slight downhill slope. The raising and lower mechanism is so smooth my 11yo can do it with ease. My son loves the sound of the backboard, saying it doesn’t sound like the “cheap hoops some other kids have” 😆 It’s more pricey than some other hoops, but in my opinion. the ease of assembly and overall sturdiness make the higher price worth it!

Assembly is super simple and takes less than 30 minutes even assembling on your own, but easier with two people. The only two negatives I can site are: 1. Compared to the setup video some of the pieces look to be a bit cheaper than earlier models with a plastic piece under the rim rather than metal and a few other pieces that aren’t as high quality as the earlier model and 2. The height adjustment with the crank is easy to use and can do any height between 8 and 10 feet, but it is very slow to adjust. Have to crank for about 1-2 minutes straight and wind it a hundred plus times to go from 8 to 10 feet or vice versa. Otherwise is a great basketball hoop.

After a nightmare with another "traditional" Spalding hoop -- which proved impossible to assemble due to manufacturing defects in the main pole -- the Momentous EZ assembly looked appealing as you don't have to fit the sections of the pole together (which is the hardest part of assembling the traditional portable hoop). Well, Spalding has done a nice job on the design as it was fairly easy to assemble, and while not 30 minutes, it was probably 90 mins or so working at a relaxed pace. So we've had it now for about 18 months and can say we're pretty happy. It's sturdy and has good feel. Doesn't vibrate much when the ball hits the backboard or rim. Growing up, we had a fixed hoop and I was a bit skeptical about this sort of portable hoop, but can say I am quite pleased. However, I have to point out that this isn't perfect. Unfortunately, with our piece, when you swing the pole up and lock it into place with the pin, it doesn't stand perfectly straight. It is off by some number of degrees, such that the hoop then isn't perfectly level. I have inserted some wood board pieces below the back of the base to make it level, but obviously this is disappointing. I've read a lot of the other reviews here but don't recall anyone else stating this, so appears to be an issue unique to us.

Looks great. It comes partiall assembled and the rest goes to easily. Had it completed and fill with water and non freezing gel additive within 1 hour. To be safe from another wind storm we installed 4 - 24" auger bits from Amazon next to the base and connected each end of the auger bits to one of the Rhino wratchet strap (also from Amazon) ends. This secured the base that no wind should blow it over.

Truly easy to put together. Kids feel like this is the real deal hoop and it is a quality backboard and rim. The ability to drop down the hoop in the heavy winds is a great function although after filling the base and adding some sand bags I have not had to use the feature again. It is a great hoop at a reasonable price.

Front bracket broke when somebody fell into it. Spalding said it wasn't covered of course and the replacement parts cost as much as buying a new system. The base also made out of a weak plastic that leaked a couple of weeks after I received it. Used a plastic sealer to take care of the leak. To think I waited so long for this hoop. It was easy to put together but i would stay away from this flimsy product. Spalding customer service is the absolute worst.

I agree with John Ryan's review. The model numbers are newer and the arm has clearly been reinforced. This is a safe product and seller. The video was helpful. Both paper and video directions came in handy. Realistically, it takes an hour to put together. It is probably simpler to put together than a lot of other hoops on the market. I filled the base with water and 2 Gallons of bio safe -100F Antifreeze. To be safe, I also added a bag with 120lbs of sand onto of the base. For security, I added a Samsung SmartTag Plus to the frame. My kids love it, especially the 8ft to 10ft crank option. We've been using our hoop every day. The board and base are solid. There is barely any reverb after the ball hits.
