Potatoes are thriving in 5 gal buckets—I can’t wait to harvest!
I’m thrilled with my Red Pontiac and Yukon Gold potatoes growing in 5-gallon buckets on my patio, perfect for my zone 6b/7a short season. The potatoes arrived with dirt on them, which prevents drying and preserves beneficial bacteria. The Yukon Gold bag had slight moisture, so I sprayed them lightly with 3% hydrogen peroxide and let them dry without rinsing as a precaution against unwanted bacteria. This is my first time planting food, and the plants are thriving in containers—I can’t wait to harvest! ✅Plant date: 4-17-25 Bucket 1: Yukon Gold (brown skin color) Bucket 2: Yukon Gold ✅Plant date: 4-19-25 Bucket 3: Red Pontiac (red skin color) ✅Soilless Mix Homemade - based on James Prigioni’s recipe on YouTube 🔹3:2:.5:.5 ratio Coco coir 3 (5gal buckets) Mushroom compost 2 (5gal buckets) Vermiculite 0.5 (5gal buckets) Perlite 0.5 (5gal buckets) I did half because I only had one 40lb / .75 CF bag of mushroom compost, and it filled one bucket Coco coir 1.5 Mushroom compost 1 Vermiculite 0.25 Perlite 0.25 This halved mix was enough for 3 buckets. ✅Nutrient mix per 5-gallon bucket SOP - 1/2 tsp (2.25 g) FeSOHO - 1.5 tsp Bone meal 1/4 cup Shultz (10-12-12) 1 TBS Blood meal 2 tsp Kelp 2 TBS This nutrient mix is good for plants requiring nitrogen in the early growing stage. For instance, it’s not good for carrots. 🛑It’s not a good fertilizer mix to use every 2-3 weeks on container potatoes because the nitrogen is too high. ✅Use a liquid water-soluble fertilizer every 2-3 weeks until foliage turns yellow, usually two weeks before harvest. Fish emulsion, Morbloom 0-10-10, or any water-soluble fertilizer with very low N and high PK ratios should work. ✅Layering determinate potatoes - based on Gary Pilarchik on YouTube I did 2 potatoes on the bottom and 3 towards the top because they grow in a single layer. 🛑Don’t do this with indeterminate potatoes- they grow in multiple layers. shipment gone bad, wet
received the seed potatoes, moldy and black. the sprouts were a good size but black and broken off. To bad because the potatoes were a good size. I believe they were packaged wet and then the package was sealed up air tight I have a picture if you need one

Beautiful, quality product
I have the most beautiful healthy potato plants I've ever seen in my garden. I can't say enough good things about this product. The seed potatoes were in perfect condition for planting, and if they produce potatoes as well as they have grown, I should have an abundant harvest as well.
