Calm Forest: Native American Flute Songbook

As a learner I found this book so helpful. It comes with pictures on where to put your fingers and how to make different sounds by changing finger positioning. I did like how it starts off very simple and then progresses to harder songs. I have learnt how to do the scale and now moving on to my first little song. I would highly recommend any first timers with this book it’s terrific.

As a complete beginner with the native American flute and unable to read music I found this book really easy to follow and I was able to play simple songs right away. The first three songs are open to interpretation so it's fun to play them in different ways by lengthening or shortening notes or varying the speed, which is all good for practice. The more complex songs that follow can be heard online as a guide as to how they should sound and be played. This book is a great learning aid as it relieves the monotony of practicing scales and allows the learning of melodies straight away. I've incorporated it into my daily practice of scales, a song or two from this book, plus learning a well known song just to keep everything interesting and challenging. The size of the book, A4, came as a pleasant surprise, so the format is large and easy to follow. There are 77 pages and 20 songs, 17 of which can be heard online. I'd highly recommend this book for beginners of the Native American flute wanting to vary their practice routine and play songs right from the start.

Easy to read and follow and the links to hear the actual tunes is a great addition.

We are still in lockdown so the time has come for me to get native american flute. You could play your own music right away as it is a simple instrument but I decided to get this book to practice first. I really love it. It is great for practicing but I also noticed it is very calming to play following the images and gets me out of my constantly chatting mind. The book gives you also same basic information about playing the instrument and for me as a beginner it was very helpful. Really love my book and the songs I played so far.

Easy to follow instructions for beginners.

The instructions are very basic which is good if you are an absolute beginner. The songs are beautiful and it's worth buying the book for the songs.

The book doesn’t really teach you anything about understanding how to play your flute instead it contains lots of tablature look easy enough to follow but as an absolute beginner I would have liked to be able to hear what the music was meant to sound like, which was part of the reason why I bought this book. However sadly, after typing in the really long urls for each song you get a message from Cloudflare saying the certificate isn’t valid and blocking you from going any further. So you can play the songs in the book but whether you are doing it right or not is anyones guess, so from that aspect it’s really disappointing as there are already a lot of songs freely available on the internet from places like flutopedia or flute craft etc.

Excellent simple introduction to playing Native American Flute. Playing is meant to be from the heart but sometimes it is good to have guidance. This book gives that guidance. For the price you also get links to MP3 samples of the songs that can be downloaded so in reality you are getting 43 minutes of easy solo Native American Flute music for relaxed listening as well as guidance for playing.

I read the book in 10 minutes. Then I went back and worked through the lessons. This has taken me months and I’m getting better. Enjoy the book and it’s honestly best on a screen where you can see images clearly. The music is beautiful with practice and the book is very helpful.

I’m not a beginner but this book would suit an absolute beginner as a more experienced player. Good selection of tunes, YouTube references to hear the tunes in their original form. Very easy to follow, no western music notation so you don’t have to read music to play. Pictures of fingering very easy to follow/learn. Excellent book for Native American Flute playing.

Après avoir reçu ce livre plus tôt que prévu, il m'est difficile de cacher ma joie. Avec une tablature clair et facilement compréhensible pour les débutants comme moi, ce bouquin est une véritable oasis . Je commençais à déséspérer de ne pas trouver de véritable ouvrage me permettant d'apprendre à jouer de cet instrument sans avoir à prendre des cours de solfège ou de copier d'autres musiciens sur youtube. Je le recommande à tous ceux qui souhaitent se lancer dans la flute native!
