Love, loss, sacrifice, and unimaginable strength
One of the saddest, purest, and most beautiful stories I have ever read. A story about love, loss, sacrifice, and unimaginable strength.Once I picked it up, it took all my determination to put it down even for a while. The author succeeds in touching all the soft corners of the heart and how! I'm not sure if it's an underrated book but it DEFINITELY doesn't deserve to be.

Worth the read.
The book is slow for first half of the book... it almost feels like giving up but the story told inside the story is far more interesting than the book and it kept me going. The last half of the story is so unexpected and sad. Worth the read.

Gripping!!
The books gives an insight into the aftermath of War, the unprecedented loss of human lives, hunger and uncertainties which follow bring the realisation that the world is a much better place than before ( though a lot needs to be done ! )The pace is little slow in the beginning but picks up soon and then the book is totally unputdownable

Warmth in the midst of winter
This book is absolutely perfect, from the cover to the story. Drawn by the beautifully intriguing cover,I grabbed this book ,only to fall in love with it. The book is an amazing exploration of how a person's past is effectual in determining his/her present relationships,of how pain changes people. The mother who appears to be a cold, disapproving woman,is later shown to have suffered unimaginably, during the communist purge in Russia, offering the daughters a new perspective on their previously strained relationship with their mother. The book reads like a unique fairytale, with pain, forgiveness and hope unflinchingly explored. It will leave you with a warm feeling,in the midst of even the most bitter of winters. Absolutely beautiful
