Fast cooking and highly nutritious
I saw a recipe calling for this grain, and was interested enough to purchase. The grains are very tiny and you prepare it like couscous - just pour boiling water over them, cover and let sit for five minutes. They swell up a lot so you get quite a bit of yield from a small amount. The taste is almost completely neutral, reminds me of Cream of Wheat. Can use as a breakfast porridge or in place of a starchy side or pasta. I really enjoyed it and will probably buy it again.

Unpleasant Texture!
This Imphex, African Fonio Grain was very easy to prepare and it turned out as stated on the package but the texture of this is almost powdery and really unpleasant to swallow. I think it could be placed in soups or stews and be alright but as it is, we didn't care for it. I added a little butter and some seasoning to it and the flavor was mild and good (although the smell of the uncooked grain is really strange) but the texture is very hard not to choke on. It's hard to describe other than it being powdery. I love trying new things and while I may add this to soup so it's not wasted, I wouldn't eat it the way it is after being prepared because of the texture. The Value is Okay!

Unshelled Fonio
They are without paddy and so small but looks fresh and hopefully my budgies will eat them. I am giving them in a separate dish as well as added to their soft food.Fonio is good to avoid canker in budgies.

Grains have a odd smell and didn't cook thoroughly when following package instructions
I love other grains and was excited to try these. There was an expiration sticker on the bottom of the bag that I couldn't read entirely since it was kind of tucked in a seam, but sometime in 2026. However, the grains had an off smell to them that I would characterize as stale. It may just be the way they smell so I went ahead and followed the instructions to prepare them. The water didn't absorb well and they were still quite gritty. I will give them another try and instead of just adding hot water like with quinoa, I will actually boil them until the water absorbs. Hopefully that helps with the grittiness as well.

Like Malt O-meal
Not sure what other reviewers are tasting, but there is no weird taste, smell, or texture to this. It smells like rice or any grain. Also, the small, dark specks in the grains are from the husks, not "contaminants" like some have claimed. When it comes to the fonio, it's okay but not great. Texturally, it is not like couscous like others have said, but somewhere in between grits and Malt O-meal if you've ever had that cereal. I would probably only eat this as a breakfast/sweet food because it reminds me of Malt O-meal so much and for me, it's "type-cast" as such. If I were to eat it in a savory application, I'd probably do something like a cheesy grits. While this isn't something amazing for me, I am confused by all the negative reviews for things it is not.
