A good shoe
I’m very much a novice runner, started last year (in retirement) and now run between 1 and 3 miles most days, with personal distance record 8.5miles. These shoes, the gore-tex versions, were bought to replace an identical pair of non gore-tex, that had served me well apart from a worn down tread, after a reasonable use. I didn’t particularly want the gore-tex, but price was good, and cheaper than the non gore-tex so I gave them a try. I wore them first time today, for a 5k run. Absolutely fine from the outset, just like my old ones but a little more firm without the worn out tread, no discomfort at all at 5k. Still not sure if gore-tex is beneficial for running, as I’ve no inclination to recreate the beach scene from Chariots of Fire. One significant advantage did quickly come to light however, when I gave them a wash (I’d ran through a field covered with fertiliser). The old shoes used to quickly get waterlogged inside and out when washed and rinsed. The new ones, with Gore-tex, stayed nice and dry inside - so that’s a plus.

Comfortable, light and grippy
This is the 3rd pair of Salomon trail shoes that i've purchased. The previous two (Alphacross4 & Speedcross2) where both really comfortable, light and grippy but both developed tears in the fabric very quickly. I decided to give Salomon trail shoes one more go, mainly because the previous pairs were just so comfortable.... The Alphacross5's do have a different design and do look like they might last a bit longer. So far they've been really good. As with the previous shoes, these are light, comfortable and grippy. I use them for hill walking, varied terrain from firm, gravely and muddy. They perform well on all of these surfaces. So far i've covered about 320 miles in them (usually between 2 - 5 miles each hike) and so far no rips of tears. As with the others, you do need to go up at least a half size. I take a half size up and they are still a little bit snug but i prefer them to be a bit snug as opposed to a little loose. The reason I havent given 5 stars is because this time I went with the Gore-Tex option. They definitely aren't waterproof!! I've been out a few times and come back with wet socks. That's disappointing really (i've applied a waterproof spray now). But apart from that so far they've been great. I'll update this review in 3 or 4 months (or when they split, whichever comes first..)

Lightweight, comfortable, grippy walking shoes
I used these on a resent hike in Snowdonia on a camping trip , they fit as comfortable as trainers but with excellent grip and good re enforcement on the toes incase of banging on rocks. Quite low on the ankle so they don't offer a lot of support like a hiking boot , but the lightweight design feels so much better than wearing a heavy boot. I found the grip to be very good on Rocks , Rocky paths and they don't weigh you down at all even on long hikes. Obviously walking through boggy ground can be a problem with these on but for Rocky paths they are really good , they are very comfortable too. The first time wearing these for a long hike they felt great , no rubbing , no blisters , even without being worn in, it was just like wearing comfortable lightweight trainers but with tougher grips. I like the slim design, they are not bulky at all , they do seem durable though thanks to thick treads and soles. The outer material is lightweight, they lack ankle protection and knock protection to the sides of the shoe but the toe ends are rugged and protected. I'm pleased with the comfortable lightweight fit and the toe protection, easy to walk in for long treks , for the price I paid of £60 I see that as excellent value.

Far too tight
I really liked these but they are just far too tight in the toe, even when you size up. A real shame because they are great looking and nicely made. Plus, apart from the ridiculously tight toe, they were quite comfortable and I imagine would be perfect for trail runs of any distance. If you have narrow feet then these are likely to be a good purchase.
