Seriously, consider this one, it's only a few quid more...
Why is this not more popular?! I know there are cheaper versions out there everyone, but I'm so glad I put down a few more quid for this one.I bought this to replace the really generic chinese version with the red/yellow/blue buttons. It was OK, and great for the price, but there were a few things that annoyed me. [1] Battery compartment cover kept falling off [2] zero it, open it, close it - not back at zero - not far out, but rarely zero [3] just felt a bit scabby. But yeah, it was a tenner so great value, does the job, annoyed me a bit.So I decided to be REALLY lavish and throw silly money at another. Yeah 22 quid! But that's literally twice as much. So is it better? God yes! [1] Returns to zero [2] build quality - feels more "starrett/mitutoyo" standard than "silverline" [3] Inches as fractions is an option, not just decimal inches - no more trying to remember that 7/8" is 0.875" [4] battery cover is screwed down, and you get a little screwdriver that fits in the moulded case [5] declared IP54 so splash and dust proof [6] nice case [7] EXTRA battery - OK they're cheap, but when was the last time you got something WITH batteries, and an extra one too.The ones for a tenner are great, this one is great and less annoying :) So glad I upgraded. I'm not chucking the other one, I'll take it home, but this one is going straight to the workshop.UPDATE:Further to my review, I've found one minor drawback in use. This LCD is not backlit. I still think it is excellent, but would change my review to 4.5 stars as my workshop is a little dark in some corners. Bear this in mind if you work in a dank garage!

Quality caliper
This is a really nice, quality made item. There is no plastic feel to these as even the battery cover is produced from a polished metal. They are super accurate and the readout returns perfectly to zero every time they are used. For those who work in imperial scale there is an option for fractions too which, you don't get on cheaper types. You even get a small screwdriver for battery replacement (spare battery provided) and a cleaning cloth to keep the calipers in great condition. Nice hinged protective box to keep them safe too.All in all very impressed. Perfect for my work.Recommended for those who like a good quality item to do a good quality job.

I would buy this again without hesitation...
My old digital caliper had gone faulty so I jumped onto Amazon to get a new one ordered. As others have said this unit is worth the extra few quid - very nicely made, solid, repeatable readings. Feels very professional for the money. Fractions - although I'll seldom use them - are very clever; I've not seen this before on a caliper. As a quick test, opening the caliper wide and closing it quickly seems to be a good measure of how tightly the encoder mechanism is tracking the motion. This one is spot and and goes back to zero every time.I am well pleased with my purchase. Interaction with supplier/amazon regarding non-delivery of initial order (stuff happens...) was commendably professional and courteous.

Very nice digital caliper.
Much better than one I bought from Maplin a couple of years ago. The reading stays accurate, the head moves smoothly and isn't easy to knock out of place. It feels more solid. Comes with a little cleaning cloth and ample instructions. For comparison my previous one would sometimes refuse to turn on. If it did the reading would sometimes go out by up to 0.03mm during a slide and could vary up to 0.05mm with the head perfectly still, all with a brand new battery in it. Pretty sure it would also short out when measuring things like aluminium profiles.

Buy one
After my previous Vernier gave up, I needed a replacement sooner than later. After reading other peoples comment, I went for this model. It is brilliant: it has an excellent display, I like the fact, that soon as you move the scroll wheel to take a measurement, it automatically turns on. Also, the larger battery is a great bonus compared to my previous model. What really sold me, and made me click: purchase, was the fact of the accuracy of this model compared to other cheaper models. I agree with other comments, worth paying the extra for this Vernier. One final point: I ordered the Vernier in the evening, it arrived the following day; that's what I call good service.

DISAPPOINTING
The installed battery was flat when it arrived. The supplied screwdriver for changing the battery is nowhere near the right fit for the screw so be careful not to damage the screw head socket. It is accurate but any precision machinists or toolmakers worth their salt will find this caliper cumbersome and lacking in 'feel' for precise measurements. I have had and currently have a few Vernier and Digital calipers and this is not a good one.
