No, its not needed - the boiler stays on the floor and the iron detaches from the unit and sits on a special heat resistant pad on top of the ironing board. It works great - no need for cord holder (I think you are referring to the steam line from the boiler to the iron). I had another unit that had a funky attachment that the cord was supposed to sit in - we never used it. This unit works great. Jack
