This review is for the 7.5in/178N gas strut replacement for the Sentrysafe QAP1BE. Over time, as has been the case with MANY other Sentrysafes like ours, the gas strut failed. The original was manufactured in China. The brand is unimportant, as branding in China serves only as a differentiator, not a signal of quality...but the manufacturing seemed typical for the period, as the strut service life was less than the battery life of the biometric sensor at 1.5 years. Examining the unit, it appears similar to hood supports that are installed on cars. However it's much shorter, so looking at the hardware store for a similar hood support proved fruitless. I found this replacement on Amazon, and since it was highly rated, decided to give it a try. When the replacement arrived, the bag also included a differently sized replacement eyelet for a customized installation. Fortunately the original strut also had a removable eyelet, so that was used instead. I also took the opportunity to double up on the booster springs, using both the original's and the replacement's booster springs. Installation was simple, just one screw and some force to pop the opposite end onto the ball joint. The new strut pops the lid open better than the original and with just slightly more noise on opening. The stiffness is only somewhat greater than the original - pressing the lid down to lock wasn't much more difficult than before. The length is perfect, exactly the same as the original. The final arbiter will be length of service...I'll have to report back in a year and a half to see how long the replacement strut lasts.

These are great quality, they fixed my beat up old truck canopy and made the door stop falling on my head. Easy install, too. Make sure you measure twice before ordering!

I had to send these back because I failed to measure properly. But the clip ends and the general item is of good quality.
