Disney's Sword in the Stone [Blu-ray] [Region Free]

Great film., great for kids as well.

I remember loving this little Disney movie as a child. I say 'little' movie, as it isn't one that is often remembered by viewers. The story is based on the legend of Arthur and is told here as only Disney could tell it. The animation is good ole fashioned hand drawn Disney animation and features many of the voice cast that will be familiar to regular Disney movie goers of the time. To me this movie falls into the same category as say Robin Hood; both good fun movies that give the Disney treatment to stories that we have heard and seen retold time and time again. The songs from Sword in the Stone I find very memorable but I also don't find the film to reliant on songs which to be was always a plus. Some of the Disney movies, even the best loved ones, to me are too song heavy, so this film with its almost light spattering of songs is a delight. In terms of quality, the picture is reasonable though it of course doesn't compare to more recent offerings from the studio. The sound is solid and clean, however I can really only draw comparison from my memories of an old recording I had on video of a broadcast on ITV back in the late 80's. This was one of the few Disney animated classics that was always getting an airing on a Bank Holiday Monday. The extras however do let it down. Mainly a direct port from the previous releases, but a early version of an alternate beginning has been added, but none of this really warrants the 50th anniversary edition status, in my mind anyway. To sum up, a good movie that deserves to be revisited, and without a doubt should be considered.

This is a brilliant version of the Arthur/Merlin story to span the age barriers. As the title and front cover suggest, it is a cartoon form of the beginning of the story when Arthur obtains possession of the sword and is 'educated' by Merlin. Arthur is a well-meaning but slightly accident-prone boy, and his adventures and lessons lead to much hilarity and to many magical moments. There is much life philosophy being imbibed at the same time. It grabs the attention of children from a very young age, but is also watchable for those older children who enjoy the Merlin series on tv, and is fun, light entertainment for younger Harry Potter fans. The 'duel' between Merlin and the witch is great fun. This film is brilliant for adults to 'share' with young ones, and if you have any around it's a great excuse to watch it yourself!

Arthur! Merlin! The Sword in the Stone! That's what connects Sword in the Stone to Morte D'Arthur and the Legend that is King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Even Monty Python got closer. This is the story of what would happen if King Arthur was a Fish. Or if he was a squirrel. Or if Merlin had a witch fight. That's it. No other plot. It's a film compilation of mini cartoons tied oh-so-loosely together by Merlin's quest to guide the boy King to manhood amnd accidentally finding Excalibur (Not to be confused with the movie of the same name - not EVER) I does however, work. The animation is as good as any that Disney rolled out. the tunes are slight but fun "The Magnificent Mad Madam Mim" a highlight. It is also enjoyable to watch (as an adult too) As with Robin Hood reviewed elswhere, the brunt of these escapades have appeared on Disney Time at some point. The picture as always has been cleaned up and has a smattering of extra features. I'm glad they are releasing the 50+ official animated Disney features on BR but where are the EVENT releases similar to the likes of The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, their bigger titles. I intend to get every one to complete the collection irrespective of quality (Dreading Home on the Range) but I still would recommend this if you are being selective.

A wonderful Disney movie from yester-year, digitally remastered so it looks fresh and new-ish. Plenty of bonus features including sing-a-long to the movie.

The family saw this year's ago and really enjoyed it so got this for my grandsons

Another fab Disney movie that gets overlooked I think but a very entertaining one at that Disney’s take on our King Arthur one I recommend.

Nowdays, CGI and 3D computer animation is filling our screens with emersive graphics and quickly devised musicals, but sometimes it still feels flat. The humor and fantasy are lost in social underlines. Disney animated productions used to be well tuned, including humorous well-scripted non-political storylines and fantasy. Sword in the Stone is a fantasy off-shoot of the Arthurian legend in a feature length hand animated classic. Arthur is referred to as The Wart, the evil sorcerous is referred to as Madam Mim and along with a talking owl, we have the magical Merlin, stuck in an era without modern conveniences. I love the lighthearted songs included in the movie and wonder how many were rejected by Walt at a time when he would reject various songs because he felt the did not fit right. Buy this movie for yourselves and your children. ZZZThe quality shines through, even on large modern day 4K TVs, as long as you accept pre-computer animations.
