The device is SED enabled all of the time. It does not affect the performance of the device, at least has not in my usage

I used it with a USB hard drive enclosure with power to transfer data from another drive. It transferred the data pretty quick.

does it require SATA-molex adapter or pin mod for the power disable feature?

Yes, and the adapter is included in the box the drives are shipped in.

Will this work with sata cables with 5 wires without the adapter?

I have 5 of these and they do not work on my corsair rm850e power supply. I also am not a fan of these adapters, so I used kapton tape to cover the 3rd pin and they work fine with the power supply now.
