The Fantastic Made Visible: Essays on the Adaptation of Science Fiction and Fantasy from Page to Screen is an excellent compilation, filled with essays that are as diverse as the genres of science fiction and fantasy and as unique as the original written texts themselves. The variety is most appealing with topics ranging from Jules Verne to vampires, Robert Heinlein to Snow White, and Shakespeare to the Wizard of Oz. Pairing a written work with its film adaptation provides a triple layer of enlightenment and entertainment. As I read the essays, I enjoyed remembering the original texts, noting the filmmakers' choices in presenting those texts, and analyzing (with the essayists) the effect of those choices. Were they effective? Did they enhance or detract from the way I envisioned the work? Did the film make different points? I truly appreciated the thoughtful analysis I found in these pages. Each essay should be read, considered, and savored, like an evening chocolate or a favorite tea.
