Mine came with two connector pieces that fit into the wooden tracks. No special tracks required. It’s a very nicely made piece.

Q: Can you buy a flatbed train car that the containers can go on?

No. The Thomas Wood line does not have any such item sold individually. You'll have to buy another set or pack that contains a car. The cheapest is around $25 but they can go up to $70. I suggest you go on eBay and search "Thomas wooden cargo car" to find the older style ones for a lot cheaper that work better too.
