Honestly, it depends on the size of the 9 year olds hands. I ordered 2 pairs for myself and my daughter, who is 12, and she ended up wearing a large with me

It is adult sizing so if you are an adult that wears medium, the medium will fit as it should.

Is there a separate loop for the thumb to go in ?
