Review: My goodness, what a book! - I've just read the last sentence of the Nightingale, and I must say, it's one of the best books I've read in a long time. The writing is perfect and it's such a touching and heartbreaking novel that stays with you long after you finish it. What makes it even more powerful is the way the story spans over decades—we not only follow the characters through the horrors of World War II, but we also reconnect with them 50 years later, in 1995. Seeing how time has shaped them adds a deep emotional layer to the book. Kristin Hannah paints a vivid and moving picture of France during the war. It was fascinating to learn about everyday life under occupation, as well as the courage and sacrifice of ordinary people. This is a story of love, loss, courage, and destruction—told with great sensitivity and strength. Review: Heartbreaking, Beautiful, and Totally Gripping - I just finished The Nightingale, and honestly, it’s one of the best books I’ve picked up in a long time. I was completely hooked from the start! The writing is just beautiful and it kept me gripped the entire way through. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the story going between both sisters, but it worked so well – I was equally invested in both of them. I can’t wait to read more of Kristin Hannah‘s books!

The bravery of women in occupied France in the Second World War.
This is a good book which gathers pace as you read it. Vianne and Isabelle are sisters who are separated after the death of their mother and the apparent unwillingness of their father to care for them. Vianne, a teacher with a young child, stays in the family home in Carriveau where a German officer is billeted in her house. Isabelle, who was sent away to school, is reunited with her sister when fleeing Paris after the Germans invade. She is recruited into the resistance after she is seen defacing a poster in the town and becomes very involved in helping Allied airmen escape over the Pyranees into Spain. The misery of that journey is vividly described. She is again briefly reunited with her sister when she hides an airman in her sister’s barn with dramatic consequences. Vianne, in her turn, helps to resist the Nazis by sheltering Jewish children, taking on her friend’s Jewish child when her friend is deported but having to face losing him after the War. A second German billeted in her house is an SS officer who rapes her. Both sisters are scarred by their wartime experiences. In 1995, fifty years after the War, Vianne flies to Paris from America, where she has lived for many years, to acknowledge accolades being paid to her sister for her wartime activities. It is a satisfying ending in that you find out what happened to the other characters in the book after the War.

Berättelsen utspelas under andra världskriget och är mycket fängslande och känns väldigt trovärdig. En härlig men sorglig berättelse, som berikar våra erfarenheter och manar till eftertanke. Mycket välskriven!
