Spirit of the Shuar: Wisdom from the Last Unconquered People of the Amazon Paperback – July 15, 2001

This book was fascinating in too many ways to mention. If you have any interest in plant medicine, Amazon culture/tribes, healing and wisdom then I highly recommend. It's also a bit sad, as much of the stories happened many years ago and highlighted the impact that westerners and missionaries have had on these tribes. It left me wondering how many of the Shuar still live like the individuals documented in the book.

I've read almost all of John Perkins's books and this is one of my favorites. As a writer, he can take you on these journeys to places you may never be able to visit and he has been befriended and accepted by these native peoples who share their lifeways and spiritual practices to, hopefully, engage the Western mind-set of consume, consume, consume, no matter what the impacts to our planet might be. It is good to learn from other, more ancient cultures than our own and see how living with less is living at a higher level. Very much recommended!

I really enjoyed learning about Shuar traditions and about life in the remote regions of Ecuador. We have so much to learn and to gain from listening to indigenous people from around the globe!

This book and some others by John Perkins should be required reading for mankind. John shares the wisdom he has learned from the Shuar and others in such a beautiful way that is easy to digest and understand. We need this knowledge desperately and John has done a noble job of having it available for us. Great read. Necessary info for living a full life.

I feel I have learned a lot from this book. However the repeated comments that making love more frequently will increase your energy and well being just doesn't seem correct. If frequent love making (sex) was strengthening wouldn't prostitutes be the strongest and happiest of people?

Great read - I actually keep this on my bookshelf at work to reflect and review as I work. Great novel and biography. Easy to read and incredible visuals of the people, their history and the lessons they taught JP as well as what he is passing on to us. If you have any interest in indigenous studies and have read other books by Alberto Villoldo or shamanic practitioners - this is a MUST HAVE!

The Spirit of the Shuar took me deep into the human soul, regardless of the culture or religion. By learning about the Shuar philosophy and traditions I reflected upon how we all are One and need to protect All. And how this can be done together.

Well done Mr Perkins, a wonderful emotional investment so it seems!
