I recently purchased this valerian root, and I overall, the smell is horrible! It smells like cow manure" I tried to get past the smell, and brewed some of the root to drink and the stench literally stunk up my whole home. Even when I recieved the package in the mail sealed up, I could smell the horrible scent through the whole mailing package. It was outrageous! When I tried some of it after brewing, it was very strong and bitter, and made my mouth dry. I can't imagine taking this as a sedative, when it literally makes your nose and stomach turn! So, I threw it out. I have looked through many of the valerian roots on Amazon, and many people have stated that they all smell noxious is some way, and is an aquired taste. Also, some valerian roots seem to look different from others, depending on where they are grown. But regardless, of this one or any other, I don't think I will purchase this herb again, because of the smells. I am a aesthetic person, and I can't stand horrible smells. I thought I would try it again, because a while ago I purchased some at a market in Seattle in bulk, and it had a mild woody scent, not strong at all, like this, as I remember. But this particular one from Pakistan, is truly obnoxious. It very well may be a decent product, there was nothing else wrong with it, but the smell and taste was so terrible to me. And I can see how it could attract bugs to it, if not completely sealed, because it smells like cow dung, and flies and bugs cling to the smell. No way! I wouldn't recommend this, it could also cause a toxic reaction if you drink too much.

I tried the recommended amount in a 8 ounce cup, but it didn't put me to sleep. I doubled and triple the amount and that didn't work either. I have heard by others that if you put five times the amount in a cup it's similar to elavil or darvon as far as calming you and putting you to sleep-
