Book arrived quickly and as described, good condition. Very pleased.

A very interesting perspective from a French teacher. It always felt wrong to reduce story time to a misery of unwilling son/frustrated mother. Now I've gained confidence and encouragement from Pennac who, very eloquently, helped me think through the process of teaching a child to read and understand what I already suspected - forcing someone to 'learn' is pointless, unrewarding and counterproductive. Phew, back to me reading aloud (which I love) and him being absolutely rapt in the beauty and thrill of the stories.

E Simpson's US review of 21.02.2009 led me to order a copy of the Walker Books edition (pb), expecting the illustrations to be in colour. They are not. They are in B&W except on the cover.

This is a lovely book, a primer for all who love reading for pleasure or entertainment, which provides a great starter of discussion, argument, theorising, whatever.Good for parents of small children who are just starting to read - where does it all go wrong later, and so often at school?
