Q: Is this just suitable for baking? Bread/cakes/biscuits etc? Will it also chop/slice/grate vegetables?

The Kitchen Assistant on its own is suitable for kneading bread dough and, with the supplied baking bowl and whisks, it does cake and biscuit mixtures. For vegetables you need to purchase an additional attachment - the Ankarsrum Original Vegetable Slicer and grater with 3 drums for slicing or grating. I also purchased 3 additional drums (from Pure Cookshop). I find the vegetable cutter very useful for fairly large amounts of vegetables - it's quick and efficient. Another possible attachment is the Blender - I have not purchased this (yet!), but it looks useful. All in all, having used the Assistant for over a year, I am very satisfied with mine.

Q: Can this make cakes such as a fruit cake?

I never made fruit cake. But it comes with 2 whisk attachments as standard. So it does whatever a hand mixer can do.
