Buy this router
This is only the beginning, this thing is awesome, it took me 10 mins to get it in and connected, I have not used every aspect of this thing to date, But as i get time i will, and i will update my review,So far my wife is the biggest champion of it, she can walk to the bus stop, ( 162 FT away ) and stay connected while she waits for our son.I have used the parental controls, both my children have Fire 7, 7th gen tablets, and i set them to < 18, very easy, I am by no way a network ENG, but i know a trick or 2, this thing is going to be my only router for at least the next 10 years. I have seen constant 80-95 MBs DL . and steady 10 MBs up.waiting for FIBER in my area. then this thing should SHINE

After a few hiccups, it runs beautifully!
So far so good. Very, very, very easy setup, great web interface and very useful features like VPN and AiCloud. The speeds it advertises is very true, downloaded a game on my Xbox One that was 42GB in about 10-15 minutes on 5GHz. Gave me some problems after the first day though, but I believe that was on my ISP's side due to the fact that it said I had internet, but wouldn't let me browse the web. After a factory restore, yelling at it for about 10 minutes then waiting a half hour, I finally got back on the web. Standard IT procedure, yeah my fellow tech geeks know what I'm talking about hahaha. Since then I've had no problems and it's a great product for the price. Highly recommend this product.

Good VPN router (client + server) with enough horsepower for VPN use
When you spend $90 for a router (instead of $20 for the typical one these days), you expect more, and indeed this one gives more. I bought it as a VPN router since ASUS is one of the few brands that supports both VPN Client and Server modes out of the box (OpenVPN as well as older protocols such as PPTP and L2TP that are not much used these days).Other differences from the cheaper routers:1. Faster dual CPU. It really does make a difference especially when you're using VPN or have more than a couple of connections going. (A cheap router I downloaded Tomato firmware onto for VPN was CPU-limited to only about 1/4 of the top speed I could get out of this ASUS router, which is definitely noticeable.)2. Dual band 2.4 and 5.8 GHz and the ability to have multiple guest networks on each of those bands (I think you can get as many as 8 different SSIDs out of this one router if you really wanted to (though why you would is another question).3. Dual WAN support (if you really can't be down or need higher bandwidth, you can subscribe to 2 different ISPs and have the router automatically load share between the two).4. USB 3.0 AND USB 2.0 interfaces for hard drive and printer respectively, though also supports Mobile 3G/4G dongles, with built-in software to share the above via the network.5. A very complete user interface.6. For nerd types, a nice Android or iOS App that lets you do some basic configuration and monitoring of the router from your smartphone. There are a couple of negatives:- Documentation is very sparse. I was looking for a VPN router and even though ASUS has a very good selection, you'd never guess that from browsing their website, where it's hardly even mentioned as a feature except incidentally (you certainly can't search for routers that support it).- The so-called "full manual" that comes on the CD is very barebones, covering perhaps 20% of the functionality of the modem (the QuickStart Guide is even sparser). So the only way to know about and use the advanced features is to (a) guess that they exist before you buy the modem (b) check out all the options on the web interface once you have the modem and (c) already know what all the features mean and what they do.- The web interface is buggy. The "live" performance screen does not update and even worse if you click on it, it will log you off and you will have to log on again to the router. The VPN Client tab is similarly buggy and will often cause the web interface to hang completely requiring the router to be rebooted. And this was after I updated the firmware to the latest version. Once you set it up, though, it seems to be stable.- Minor quibble but who on earth decided to put tiny dark grey lettering against a black background with indecipherable icons to indicate what the indicate lights mean?! You need a flashlight and a magnifying glass (and some imagination to translate the icons into text). Why not just "Internet" "LAN" "WAN" "WiFi" etc., in nice white lettering against the dark background??

Surprisingly reasonable and solid bargain for a real high-performance router. Comcast Burst Pro customers, this is for you!
Haven't had it for a terribly long while, but I have noticed a couple things that set it apart from the other wireless routers I've tried. My service is Comcast Xfinity and with this modem my speed is reliably 180mbps (I pay for 150).- Trivial to set up. Once connected to the computer via ethernet cable, it literally walks you through a few setup screens and updates its own firmware.- Trivial to use. During setup it asks you for your password, your network name, and whether to broadcast 2 networks at once (one on the 2.4GHz band and the other on the 5GHz band). My old devices like the 2.4Ghz band more and can't see the 5GHz band.- AC speed is top notch. It can literally sustain >420mbps up+down traffic simultaneously, putting it darn near to the advertised 867mbps.- 2.4GHz network speed is quite poor, reaching ~50mbps on a good day. I think it negotiated 802.11g connection even with my 2.4GHz wifi-N receivers. It's not the receiver's fault because they worked with an el cheapo TP-Link Wifi N router. Oh well.- The ethernet ports are actually gigabit. Not piss-poor 100mbps like other routers. This is important if your internet speed is actually higher than 100mbps.- Range is reasonable. AC range does diminish a bit with walls, but this is a function of physics (higher energy waves penetrate less well through materials). There are higher-range options which amplify the signal a bit more, but this is unnecessary in a 1000 sq ft home.- Price is sound.- Latency is low. I was unable to detect appreciable latency on the wired ethernet network. Similarly, AC recievers within 10 feet experienced no appreciable latency cost (a plus for gaming). I did not experience cut-outs in the wifi.

Wifi difficult by password
I bought a used one that seemed like new, and I'm wondering if the problem I'm having is the reason it was returned. If I connect wirelessly and use the password it keeps saying that there are connection problems. However, if I connect by WPS I have no problems. I had set everything to my previous network so I shouldn't have had to reconnect at all.Aside from that it seems okay, I prefer it to the TP link that I bought which never showed all the devices connected to it and gave problems with my IP cameras. This one shows the devices and so far I haven't lost the signal from my wired IP camera which used to disappear with the TP link. Only hope it lasts longer than the previous Asus that I had which only lasted 2 years.
