These books are always great and this one did not disappoint. My 10 year old is riveted by it. So cool to see the process the creatives go through to create magic.

Inside Out 2: The Art Behind the Sequel
As Riley, the main character of Inside Out 2, grows up and enters puberty, so too does The Art of Inside Out 2. Unlike its predecessor, this book not only includes more text that helps readers dive deeper into the creative process behind the animation, but it also features a much richer collection of vibrant, eye-catching artwork filled with intricate details—and, at last, emotions! So, let’s hop aboard the Brainfart boat and float along the Stream of Consciousness.★★★★★ ArtIt’s hard to review this book without comparing it to the first one, but I’ll try to keep speculation to a minimum. That said, this book showcases a much higher level of artwork. There are tons of new characters, each with a vast amount of concept art and expressions. You’ll find color keys, storyboards, new locations, side characters, and—one of my favorites—a whole section devoted to discarded ideas that didn’t make it into the final version of the film. I recently played an amazing video game called Dredge, and it seems to me that the Brainfart boat design, Epiphany Bay, and the Bad Ideas Market were either inspired by the game or made as a perfect homage to it. I absolutely love it!★★★★☆ TextOne of the drawbacks of the first book was its lack of text, which left me wishing for more context. This time, the authors clearly took that feedback into account and included much more description and explanation. To be fair, it ain't much, if compared to text-heavy DreamWorks’ artbooks, but it’s honest work =) I really enjoyed the captions about the story’s progression and the development of the new emotions.★★★★☆ Book DesignThis book is a solid example of Chronicle Books' signature style: it’s well-designed, with layouts that are organized and easy to read. The paper has a unique feel, almost like plastic—fingerprint-resistant, which was a nice touch. Is it coated with some sort of glossy finish or a new paper treatment never used before? Either way, flipping through the pages is a smooth, satisfying experience. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is due to the flimsy, easy-to-tear dust jacket and the uninspired cover hidden underneath it.★★★★★ PriceI purchased a new copy with a 50% discount, and this deal is still available as of February 2025. There are plenty of copies still on the market, so you have a good chance of grabbing a brand-new one at a decent price. Around $20 feels like a fair enough offer for a book of this quality.★★★★☆ Overall ImpressionsWhile Inside Out 2’s global box office has already reached nearly $1.7 billion, The Art of Inside Out 2 doesn’t seem to be flying off the shelves quite as quickly. However, if you loved the animated film and are an artbook enthusiast, a collector, or even someone with a bit of tsundoku (the phenomenon of buying books you pile up and never get around to reading), this book definitely has something for you! By “something,” I mean fantastic imagery, concept art, final key art, a glimpse behind the scenes of the film’s creation, and, most importantly, a book filled with wonderful emotions that you’ll feel as you read or even just flip through the pages.
