Rating 4.5 - Such A Great Read!
Izzy and Lucas are enemies, both receptionists for a hotel. They are in constant competition with each other, always trying to one-up the other or retaliate with snide comments. But when a certain competition cones about that may help save their hotel from closing, they must overcome their differences and work together. But of course they have to make a competition out of it.Izzy and Lucas' characters really shone and leapt of the page. Their vibrant personalities and charisma brought them to life and ensured that you fall in love with these characters and really root for them. The chemistry and banter between the 2 main characters really pulled me in, and I felt really invested in their relationship, wishing them to overcome their differences and realise they are perfect for each other.I also really enjoyed the plot. I've read a lot of romance read, and most of them just focus on the romance, leaving the story to feel flat and lacking in depth. But the wake-up call has a lot of depth. The storyline was really intriguing and added a great layer to the book. Now on to the reason why I knocked my rating down half a star. I am very sorry for this, but this is due to my personal preference. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but I just really dislike the miscommunication trope, and since it was there at the start of the book, I struggled to get into it at first. But thanks to the fantastic characters and fun plot, I was able to ignore the trope and get invested with the story.I highly recommend this read!

Easy to read, Great Characters
I think this book was very enjoyable and very easy to read and a quick read, the characters were all written beautifully you can tell exactly who they are, and there’s some very touching moments in the book, I think it talks about grief beautifully and I like the friendships. The only reason I haven’t give it 5 stars is because it’s quite easy to guess where the plot is going sometimes like it’s hinted at and then still takes another few chapters to tell you which makes it I guess predictable, and I think the ending feels a bit too forced like I don’t think completely everything needs explaining but I understand why it’s done this way, and I think one of the side characters sexuality being Demi-sexual feels a bit like stuck on because we don’t find this out from the character herself and there’s no context on it, it’s more like this person is this and then it’s just dropped in again later on so I feel this could of been shared better I know I’m being very harsh because I really like this authors other books so that’s just my reasoning of why I’ve gave this one 4 stars instead of 5

Book 48 of 2024 finished 18/4/24 ⭐️⭐️⭐️Last Christmas Izzy sent her colleague Lucas a Christmas card confessing her true feelings for him and asking him to meet her under the mistletoe. When Izzy arrives she finds Lucas kissing her flatmate instead. Heartbroken at his actions she is determined to be as difficult to work with as possible.Lucas and Izzy have spent the past year playing a game of oneupmanship, the competition between them is notorious. Now, with the hotel they work in on the brink of closure, they must put their feud aside and work together to try and save it.My thoughts: I adore Beth O’Leary’s books and was so excited to read this one, however I think this is my least favourite of them. The story is sweet, ‘The Ring Thing’ is adorable, and the rivalry between the main characters is fierce but I just didn’t love Izzy like I love her other female leads. I found Izzy’s behaviour really immature for a grown woman and this was really irritating. Lucas on the other hand has the potential to be a fantastic character but unfortunately he was paired with a woman who behaved like a teenager. That being said, the heartwarming charm of the story makes this worth a read, I just don’t think it has the magic of The Flatshare or The No-Show

Could not put it down!
I really enjoyed this book; it’s beautifully written with gorgeous characters. I love how Beth writes both sides of the story and is always a bit raunchy too! Great fun rom com book! Can’t wait for the next one.

Slow but charming story
I have read and loved all of Beth O’Leary’s previous books. For some reason this book just didn’t quite live up to my expectations.Izzy and Lucas work the front desk together at a Hotel, however the hotel is financially struggling and may not survive beyond the festive period. Both Izzy and Lucas hate each other, so when tasked with effectively trying to save the hotel they have to try and work together and see beyond their differences. It’s a typical enemies to lovers style book which this author normally manages so well, however in this case the story (especially the first half) felt slow and because of this I found it hard to fully engage with it at times. That said the development of Lucas in particular was well written and there was a good level of humour (especially involving some of the side characters). It’s a sweet enough story, but falls short of other Beth O’Leary books.

Easy Summer read
You can't go wrong with a Beth O'Leary book ! Lovely easy read - Lizzie and Lucas are bitter rivals who work on the reception of a small hotel. For the sake of their fellow colleagues and guests they work opposite shifts as they can't see eye to eye. However the hotel is facing its toughest challenges and they need to find a way to work out their differences and help save it. You know what the ending will be but its the process of getting there that is fun ! Enjoyable read !

unbelievably amazing
Beth O’Leary is an author I discovered this year and I am in love with her writing. She writes real people with real emotions. You fall in love with them and you’re sad to say good by to her characters when you finish her books. I cannot recommend this book enough! Easily 5 stars!

A FUN ROMP MOST OF THE TIME...
Two hotel receptionists—and arch-rivals—find a collection of old wedding rings and compete to return them to their owners, discovering their own love story along the way. It’s the busiest season of the year, and Forest Manor Hotel is quite literally falling apart. So when Izzy and Lucas are given the same shift on the hotel’s front desk, they have no choice but to put their differences aside and see it through. The hotel won’t stay afloat beyond Christmas without some sort of miracle. But when Izzy returns a guest’s lost wedding ring, the reward convinces management that this might be the way to fix everything. With four rings still sitting in the lost & found, the race is on for Izzy and Lucas to save their beloved hotel—and their jobs.As their bitter rivalry turns into something much more complicated, Izzy and Lucas begin to wonder if there’s more at stake here than the hotel’s future. Can the two of them make it through the season with their hearts intact? My Thoughts:The Wake Up Call was a light read that took us on a journey with two coworkers who are trying to get along while fighting their attraction at the same time. The story alternates between them throughout the book.In some ways, I found the two of them annoying since they seldom really tried to see the other person’s point of view.A fun romp most of the time. 4.0 stars.

Bom!

Beth O‘Leary classic
I loved it. Every page of it. Just what I wanted from this light romance novel. I loved the flatshare and I loved this one, too. If you’re into enemies to lovers you’ll love it, too.

Recommended read
A lack of communication leads to a lot of misunderstanding between Izzy and Lucas. The book contains a (mostly) very likeable and entertaining cast of characters, working at a financially challenged hotel in New Forest. I enjoyed it.
