Whatever you call this fancy style, sometimes it's what you need. The black finish seems durable. You might want to hit the high points with Rub'n'Buff, just to bring up the design: you know how black on black can kind of disappear. In my case, I caught these on sale, which is why I'm gilding them rather than having bought the gold ones to begin with. They are going in a 1/6 doll room with some gloriously detailed Miniento Louis XVI furniture. The walls needed art, and less ornate frames would have looked so puny and lost. The panel detailing has 3D designs like this, in air-dry clay, so Oxford frames were not going to work. A special note: the flocked back works have a little ribbon loop, so when you move the single latch aside, you can pull it open without breaking a nail or gouging up the back plate. I hadn't had one like that before. There only has to be one latch because the cover for the opening hinges all along one side, making it easier to change the art. Of course, it hangs by its metal rings or sits on its stand in either landscape or portrait mode.

Nice frame

This picture frame is really ornate, and compliments the artwork inside it, but there's a couple issues preventing me from giving it 5 stars. The first and most important is that the glass is glued to the frame. I noticed this because there was some spillover where the glue was used on one corner that I initially thought was a crack. Don't ever drop this frame because if the glass breaks, you won't be able to replace it; the whole thing will be trash. And while minor, that little glue line is going to bother me any time I look at the art. The second issue (which other people may not mind) is that the back hinges open rather than coming off entirely. This means if you have any artwork thicker than a standard photograph, you're going to be applying uneven pressure to it. This piece I intended to use in it is multiple layers of cardstock, so it wasn't thrilled about being squished on one side. And lastly, while the detail carvings of the frame are beautiful, the black is impressively boring. I didn't get from the product photos just *how* flat this black paint is, and so all the beautiful swirls and leaves basically fade to nothing. I intend to fix this with some gold leaf highlights, but as it stands, it's just a mismatch. If the paint were a satin finish instead of a matte, it would be a whole lot nicer so those textures could have a presence without overwhelming the artwork. I did already notice some minor flecks of black paint chipped off, so it may be in your best interest to (re?)seal this frame with a different sealer anyway. All that said, this is still an incredibly lovely picture frame for the price, and adds much more character than your average department store rectangle. It's great that you can stand it up (as I chose) or hang it, with hooks for hanging it in portrait or landscape mode. Definitely a good buy.
