That is a black sand magnet pick up tool used in the final stages of gold panning. It is used to remove iron based black sands or magnetite from your concentrate material that can be a real chore. It makes your fine gold recovery much easier. Works best dry, but will work wet as well.

The snifter is used after you’ve panned down to gold or nearly so to help with extraction from your mineral deposit

So the question nobody's asked is which is better at recovering gold.... I would think the alum with mat?

I haven’t tried mine yet. I would bet they’re equally good because one catches nuggets the other fine gold. It’s gonna be fun can’t wait to get mine!
