Black Panther [Blu-ray]

A wonderful film
All Marvel superheroes are conflicted. That's one of the things that used to set them apart from DC superheroes. Recently, however, DC apparently figured out that a big reason Marvel's crop of superheroes is so popular is the fact they routinely face problems familiar to us all and so now we have Batman and Superman, for example, struggling with inner demons. It's because Marvel pretty much pioneered this image of superheroes that I fully expected "Black Panther" to spend a considerable amount of screen time on that aspect and I was not disappointed. Bad choices made by the new king's late father, worse choices made by his late uncle, and the rage of an abandoned child all factor into this first-class movie. The result is a rich script that explores many relevant social issues in what is an action-packed narrative about a new generation coming to grips with the realities of a world increasingly divided between the haves and the have-nots.Chadwick Boseman as the young king is excellent in the role but I have to single out Michael B. Jordan for his extraordinary performance as the child left behind when his father - an undercover operative from Wakanda - dies. As a grown man, he seeks revenge on the son of the man who killed his father and he brings a studied ferociousness to the role. It was a real pleasure watching him on screen. The CGI is excellent - which is not at all surprising given the fact this is a Marvel Studios film - and the direction is very smooth, keeping the storyline intact throughout this fairly long film. The cast does an excellent job of bringing the script to life and the writing stops just short of being preachy when it tackles important social issues. I must also mention that it is a film that features strong female characters, a definite plus in my opinion, and one that I applaud. All in all, a wonderful film.

One of the best Marvel films; they’ve really hit their stride
I’d say the best thing about Black Panther as opposed to many other superhero movies, is that it really concentrates on giving depth and humanity to filling out the characters - not only the heroes but also the villain. All villains have their reasons and own internal logic for doing their evil, but almost always it’s murky and illogical to the audience (I’m looking at you, Thanos!), but here they spend time giving you Killmonger’s viewpoint and the history behind it, and why he chooses the path he goes down. Of course this segment of the plot is a big turnaround of the oppressed against the oppressor, and that’s what drives the white supremacists so crazy, and why they give this film 1-star reviews here.A couple of things (beside the action) you should really pay attention to is the beautiful production design, and the amazing costume design. After watching the film once, you should absolutely watch it again just to look at these aspects of it and see what you missed the first time around. Overall it’s one of the most colorful ‘eye candy’ films I’ve ever seen, similar in that respect to ‘Moana’. And especially watch the animated end credit sequence which is uniquely styled, and has the terrific Kendrick Lamar/Sza song ‘All The Stars’ playing over it. One of the best credit sequences ever. There are only a couple of small quibbles I have with the film - first, I wish they would have explained far more about the element vibranium and why exactly it’s properties were responsible for the incredibly advanced Wakandan technology (really on a par with the Kree, at least); and second Andy Serkis as the villain Klau was PAINFUL to watch, just an incredibly annoying and way over the top performance. The director really should have had him dial it way, way back. But those are the only problems I had. Very recommended movie experience.

WAKANDA FOREVER!!!
Black Panther is a great movie that everyone can enjoy. I know some people see so many black people and get confused but most movies are the opposite and no one says they are racist or only for whites. And just like a Chinese martial arts movie would logically be set in China, this is a movie about Wakanda and the Black Panther, its king and protector; naturally set in Africa. That being said, what you'll enjoy about this movie is the story. Similar to the Lion King in many ways, T'challa suffers the same loss and has to defend his nation but there's a magnificent twist that comes by way of one of the most compelling villains in cinematic history. Why? Because the hero and villain are, for many, a matter of perspective, and interchangeable. Some might feel the villain is justified because of what he's fighting for; fighting to end a wrong being to millions of people all over the world while the hero is only trying to protect "his people" who are members of his nation. This movie deals with very real feelings that a lot of people have. And it offers a solution in the aftermath of chaos. So while it is an entertaining ride it is also masterful in terms of message and morality. It is an excellent movie with an excellent cast and director.

Good but not amazing
I have watched every marvel movie that have made to date as I am one of those collected comics forever guys. I heard a lot of people around me saying how amazing the movie was and though a good movie and a very good comic movie it wasn't any better or worse than some of the best movies they have come out with in the last ten years or so.Black Panther was always a second (or third) string character a lot like Iron Man was back in the day, a good guy to have pop in for a bit and make a significant change to a main character like Spider Man or a team like the Avengers but ultimately pop back out with little fanfare. The villain in this was one of the best though, his reasoning was sound and his way about doing things fell within the rules of the universe. Though based on the rules laid out in the movie the good guy had to act a bit like a bad guy and that was a fun twist.Over all I liked it a lot it just isn't the best of the Marvel movies to come out though it is high on the list.
