Q: I have an 8lb dog. I assume I should order the small, but I don't want her to be skittish about a small space. is there any advantage to a medium?

I have a 6lb and 10lb dogs. I think the larger size makes it easier to get in and out without being squeezed. My little dog like to stand 1/2 in 1/2 out and the bigger size makes it more comfortable. Also, if you ever get another larger dog you won't need a new door.

Per the manufacturer this door has an adjustable height to fit a sliding patio door from 77 5/8" to 80 3/8"

Q: Does this work with vinyl doors?

Yes, I have it my vinyl sliding door. It fits the screen which makes it nice as you can shut and lock the door within it removing the pet door. We ( people & pets) really like our pet door, much better than the other one I have.
