Seems to be a good product...but I have some questions
I only use Avocado oil for cooking, so I have used many different brands over the years. After using this oil, I would say that it seems to be a good product. But, two things make me question the product.First, is the smoke point. A high smoke point is one of the main reasons that Avocado oil might be chosen over another oil. The three brands I have used most recently are Kirkland (Costco), Chosen Foods, and Massimo Gusto (both purchased from a Kroger owned store). This 'Chef's Life' oil smokes at a significantly lower temperature than those other brands. There is no regulatory number that I am aware of for the smoke point of an Avocado oil. But, it is common for it to be in the high 400s to the lower 500s. I was getting some pretty significant smoke at a temperature of around 350. That's not necessarily a deal breaker for me, but it does make me question either the ingredients (label says only one ingredient, Organic Avocado Oil). Or, perhaps this oil is being processed in a way that is lowering it's smoke point. I have no way to know or verify this, it's just from using the product vs others. The second odd thing I noticed was from reviewing the 'Nutrition Facts' label between the Massimo Gusto brand and the Chef's LIfe (see side by side photo):Both have 120 calories per tablespoon or 15ml.Both have 14 grams of Total Fat. The label on the Chef's Life brand shows a 4% lower number (22 vs 18) for the percentage based on a 2,000 calorie diet. In this case, the Massimo Gusto is correct. 14 grams is 21.5% (clearly rounded up to 22) of the 65 grams the USDA uses. So, the Chef's Life label is showing a lower percentage than it is.BUT...when looking at the Saturated Fat component, Chef's Life appears to be correct. 2 grams is 10% of the recommended daily number (20 grams). In this case, the Massimo Gusto is incorrect. It states 5%, but it in fact is 10%. Both get a knock for poor labeling I guess. Both brands show Zero Trans Fat, which is good. The next item is Polyunsaturated fat. The Chef's Life brand shows 1/3rd of the amount of PUFA compared to the Massimo Gusto brand which also only has one ingredient, Avocado Oil. Which is better? A quick sample of several other brands available on Amazon indicated that most have 2 grams. The rest of the numbers were the same. Massimo calls out the Vitamin E, Omega 6, and Omega 3 values, but most other oils do not list this.Let me be clear, I don't think there is anything wrong with this oil. I do question what causes it to smoke at a significantly lower temperature than I feel it should. But, that could come down to processing, or a difference in the Avocado fruit that is used in the oil. I do like the packaging. I like to put my oils in squeeze bottles for use, and this saves me a step. The bottle is also black and likely blocks light from potentially affecting the oil, another plus. The oil works well for cooking (at lower temps) and I have no issues with flavor as one should expect with this type of oil.I received this product free of charge from the Vine program. Based on that alone, I am 100% happy with the product. Had I paid the full price for the product, I would still say it's good. But, I would do a closer comparison with other brands to make sure that this really lives up to it's price point.
