Maybe the best animated film of the last decade (outside japan)
I’ve often heard people criticizing the lack of depth and story compared to Wes Anderson’s earlier work, but I gotta say that the last film to touch my heart like this one that didn’t come from the east was “Les triplettes de belle ville”. Even though IOD takes place in a fictional Japanese city and incorporates loads of lovingly crafted references to Japanese culture, you can tell it’s a western piece of work and that is not a bad thing. The characters (voiced by the Creme de la Creme of Hollywood’s a list, even down the tiniest of roles likeTilda Swinton as Oracle and Anjelica Houston as a mute poodle) are all-together lovable and the animation style brings back fond memories of Augsburger Puppenkiste (I’m german, look it up, you won’t be disappointed!). All in all, if you love dogs, Japan or great animation you’ll have a wonderful time. If you love all three of them you’ll likely wanna watch Isle Of Dogs again right after your initial viewing. It is that good.

Wes Anderson goes canine in Japanese fashion.
Very imaginative, great use of Japanese art, culture and music and at times amusing and disturbing in turns. Possibly doesn’t flow like Mr Fox but reminded us of that movie more than other Wes Anderson films. Don’t expect all the loose ends to be explained and I do wonder what Japanese people would make of it all? Some of the male voices could have been more distinctive and varied but overall the different protagonists are well portrayed and as quirky as ever. The “fight scenes” are dealt with in a particularly clever and comedic fashion. Enjoyable but strange little tale.

Awesome
Love this film. Really interesting idea that holds the plot together. The characters and voices are brilliant. The expressions on the faces of the animated characters (especially the dogs) are hilarious and sad at the same time. Everything fits perfectly - plot, dialog, locations, characterization, voices, animated figures, music, art, graphics. Faultless.

Different
Excellent made movie, crazy but cool, and I love the animations. Not to every ones taste but my 4 yr old son started to watch this on an Air France flight. He choose this himself. And for some reason loved it and watched it for about 30 minutes. I saw a few bits if it and decided to watch the whole movie. Great, and like the Japanese theme too.
