Craftsmanship, Character, and a Classic Rivalry
From the moment I opened the packaging, the craftsmanship hits you. Each piece has real weight and presence, and the detailing is phenomenal without being fussy. England and Scotland are clearly distinct in design, but perfectly balanced as opposing sides—no confusion on the board, just pure character. You can tell a lot of thought went into making the pieces feel historically inspired while still looking clean and elegant. What really elevates this set is the personality. Every move feels like a tiny reenactment of an age-old rivalry. Pawns march with purpose, the knights feel bold and defiant, and the kings absolutely command respect. It turns an ordinary game of chess into something cinematic, half strategy, half storytelling. Functionally, they’re excellent too. The bases are well-sized, stable, and glide smoothly across the board. They feel great in the hand, which matters more than people realise when you’re deep into a long match. This is a set made to be played, not just admired. Whether you’re a chess enthusiast, a history lover, or someone who appreciates a beautifully made object, this set delivers. It’s striking without being gimmicky, premium without being pretentious, and genuinely fun to own. Easily one of the most distinctive and satisfying chess sets I’ve come across, and a guaranteed conversation starter every time it comes out

Great discussion set when playing
Wow, great pieces, very tactile and fun to play. I am English living in Scotland and play regularly with my neibough (socially). The detailing of faces and clothes is nicely rounded avoiding sharp edges when playing with them. The Scott's king is shorter than the English king as the only disparity. David Perry

A chess set for serious/experienced chess players.
The quality is immediately apparent in the look, the feel, the weight of each piece. The characters of the cast are moulded in the likeness of famous English and Scottish royalty, clergy and warring knights of old. I would not recommend it for beginners - simply because the bishops and knights are not 'at-a-glance' recognisable as such. The traditional chess pieces are immediately identifiable: the head of a horse says' knight' and the mitre says 'bishop'. The positions and powers of pieces on the battlefield need to apprise at a glance in the quick working through of countless alternate strategies. The flow is lost if all is not obvious. I like to use this beautiful set as the centrepiece in correspondence chess games. It constantly reflects the present position of play... but if I am honest, I use a simple chessboard along side with traditional pieces to scheme and plot and reflect on possibilities. Finally, if I might make a suggestion:- Unless you have a definite alternative in mind, buy the board recommended by Amazon - it is the right scale for the pieces and has a simple style to it that sits comfortably with its quality unembellished construction.
