From the beginning!
This is the first omnibus book that contains books 1, 2, and 3 of the original manga series. For any Neon Genesis Evangelion anime fan, it is a fun read. From the novel back-to-front read, to the Japanese “sound effects” (there is a glossary for what the sounds mean, if you are that interested!), to the pages of commentary from those who were involved with the television production, this is a necessary companion for anyone wanting to get more out of the Evangelion world. There is a lot that is familiar, but a lot of great additional character development and plots that are not part of the original anime series. I have blasted through both the first and second omnibus books, but am trying to pace my way through because I want to savor it. Most of the content is in black-and-white with some limited full-color pages at book transitions. The books itself has a high-quality cover that will put up with multiple-reads, as I am sure I will put it through!

Pleasantly surprised
Published by Viz, these are generously sized 3-in-1's that aestetically look amazing (even has printing across the bindings of all four vols that, when set side by side, read "Evagelion"). Some color printed pages, decent paper stock and great art printing. These books are big, thick and heavy. It's all genuine too as it was illustrated by the original artist of Eva.Just FYI: there is a 13th vol that does not match these 3-in-1's looks-wise (smaller book with matte cover instead of gloss), and a rumored 14th vol on the way.Very surprised at:The price - I tried to get the original single volume prints instead, but these 3-in-1's were SO much cheaper. It was seriously a no brainer...and glad I bought 'em.andThe story - The story remains true to the original series, yet changes enough parts to make it an interesting read if you've already seen the series/films, and a must read for fans (a must own actually, considering the amazing price. I was looking at $100+ to get all the single volumes)

The Big Book Of Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion 3-IN-1 Edition collects in one big book the first 3 original volumes of the manga series by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the anime character designer. Sadamoto has amazing art skills, and being the original designer, his depictions of the characters are just perfect. The Evas and the Angels look excellent too, though Sadamoto wasn't their designer, he does them equally beautiful. This manga is an adaptation of the original anime series and while it respect its plot in a lot of ways, Sadamoto introduces changes in it, adding scenes and expanding, reducing or deleting others. This makes it a very interesting reading and complement for those of us who watched the anime, and also a at the same time it's a great introduction to the Evangelion universe for those who missed the anime. If you already have the previous editions of this manga (the 200 pages editions), there's no reason to get this one. However, if you missed those original editions, this new collection is an excellent chance to get them for an unbeatable price. These are the main highlights of this book:- It's a GREAT VALUE edition, adding up to a total of 524 pages for only 19.99 cover price (much less with Amazon's discount), it's a book definitely worth buying.- The paper stock is good, but it's somewhat flimsy and you can see through the pages a bit. I own the Vagabond Vizbig volumes and the paper stock of those editions is much better and thicker.- The printing quality is excellent, with rich blacks and very sharp line-art.- It includes 20 pages in color, printed in glossy stock. This pages consist of the original covers of volumes 1, 2 and 3, select comic-book pages, pin-ups and tables of contents.- The trim-size is 8,6 x 5,7 inches, larger than the regular editions. I like this format a lot, the book feels really good in your hands.- The binding of the book is really solid, build to withstand multiple readings and many years to come.- As for extras, the book includes interviews with Hideaki Anno, the creator of the anime series, Ikuto Yamashita, the mecha designer, Megumu Ogata, the voice of Shinji Ikari, Yoshitou Asari, designer of the Angels, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto himself, the author of the manga and character designer, and Megumi Hayashibara, the voice of Rei Ayanami.- The reading order is from right to left, preserving the original page layout. In conclusion, this edition is a great chance to read this manga for an unbeatable price. The only negative aspect is that the paper stock quality is not as great as I expected, based on my previous experience with the Vagabond Vizbig editions. However the overall quality of the book is great, so if you are at least slightly interested in Evangelion and don't have the original volumes editions, this new collection is a must.
